Director Profile
Born and educated in Northern Ireland, MiL director Mark Cairns studied to masters level at Queen’s University Belfast from 2004 until 2010, returning in 2014 to complete his exam in Professional Practice. ARB and RIBA membership followed shortly after moving to London in February 2015.
In Ireland, he spent four productive years working for a small conservation practice where he designed and procured vernacular style new build residential properties, as well as restoring old cottages in a sympathetic and considered manner. This experience also resulted in a passion for restoring older properties, something which is embodied in the work MiL now produce.
Recent experience working primarily in the high end residential sector for a well established North London practice saw him responsible for the design and procurement of several multi million pound developments in central London, including a £3.5 million new-build house in Highgate, the £4 million renovation of a Grade II listed dwelling in Belgravia and a £5 million renovation of a Grade 1 listed property at Regent’s Park.
Currently working client-side for the UK’s largest house builder in London, Mark is working on the delivery of 2000 new-build apartment units on a former industrial site. Duties include coordinating the design team and responding to onsite queries; coordination of statutory applications, and cooperating with utility companies regarding upgraded infrastructure such as communications, power, gas and water. This has helped to develop a strong organisational approach to his work, something which will benefit all MiL Architect’s clients.
